Now that you know the story behind Ms. Durian and our diverse pastry selection handcrafted from our freshly sourced durian, are you curious of the origin of the durian fruit itself? Let us guide you through the fascinating history of the durian fruit!

The Origin of Durian

The name “durian” was derived from the Malay word for thorns, duri. Durian is believed to originate from Borneo Island and primarily comes from the tropical rainforests from Southeast Asia. Fondly regarded as the "King of Fruits", the durian is sought and savoured with passion by millions of durian lovers in the south east Asian region.

The History of Durian

There are approximately 27 recognised species within the Durio genus. The majority of the durian we source in Singapore comes from Malaysia, which is home to various durian species. Among these species Durio Zibethinus L., commonly referred to as the common durian, stands out as it is cultivated commercially in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Now that you are versed with the origin and the history of the durian fruit, let’s delve into its historical presence in Singapore and explore the durian choices that Ms. Durian offers!

The Durian’s history in Singapore

The history of durians in Singapore can be traced back to its early days as a trading port in the 19th century. Durians, primarily sourced from nearby Malaysia and Indonesia, were among the exotic fruits traded in the bustling markets. While some locals enjoyed them, the fruit's distinctive odour and rich flavour made it somewhat of an acquired taste.

In 1956, Lorong Lew Lian in Singapore received its name — “lew lian” which translates to "durian" in the Hokkien dialect. This is among other roads in the Upper Serangoon Road area named after local fruits. In 1995, during the launch of Clean and Green Week in the estate, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong personally planted durian saplings in Lorong Lew Lian as part of a symbolic gesture.

Here at Ms. Durian, we self-source our durian supply to uphold the quality and authenticity of our durians. We ensure that we obtain the finest harvest from each season, allowing us to bake our durian confectionaries all year round. Our primary choice of these creations is the Mao Shan Wang durian, which proves to be the ideal durian variety for creating our durian confectionaries!
